The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (trading today as the Australian Institute of Architects) has been active in the Northern Territory since 1952.
The Darwin Branch was created with a Southern Area Regional Committee established in Alice Springs during the early part of 1983. Today, the Australian Institute of Architects represents over 85 members throughout the Northern Territory with the Council comprising members located in both Darwin and Alice Springs.
The membership of the AIA is drawn from architects throughout the Northern Territory. Its key roles included member representation, organisation of the annual architectural awards, the promotion of architecture to the general public and various other activities throughout the year.
The AIA also organises the annual Architecture Festival which includes exhibitions, talks, competitions and guided walks around Darwin and Alice Springs.
The AIA has expanded to include student organisations such as SONA and has a particularly active young architects group.
