Between 3 - 10% of children experience some form of feeding difficulty and there are many reasons why children may have difficulty at meal times. It can be a normal pattern of behaviour for children to develop fussy eating habits at some point in their life. For most children, these patterns resolve without intervention. Some children may develop an eating disorder called ARFID - Avoidant/Restrictive Feeding Intake Disorder. These children avoid foods based on colour, taste, texture or smell. Foods may cause adverse reactions such as gagging or vomitting and whole food groups such as fruit, vegetables and quality proteins may be refused.
Other children may have difficulty with chewing and swallowing due to developmental delay, cerebral palsy, chromosomal or craniofacia abnormalities or general muscle weakness.
Tongue tie is another condition that may affect a child's ability to eat. Good tonue movement is necessary for successful breast feeding, positioning and controlling food in th mouth.
At our food school we see children with extreme picky eating problems. Small groups of children work with our therapists in a fun and interactive way. While children attend food school, parents are invited to attend parent sessions where they are given detailed strategies to help overcome feeding battles.
