Details

The Academy of Young Muslims Australia is a sub-branch of the New South Wales Islamic, Social and Cultural Association. The Academy was founded by first generation Australian Muslims who come from a wide variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds in the year 2012, hoping to establish an independent and autonomous educational institute for Australian Muslim children.

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of debate amongst academics, politicians and the general public about Islam and it's inherent nature. Is it possible for Islam and Muslims living in the West to be in harmony with the broader context of society? Are Muslims confronted with adversities whilst trying to construct an Islamic identity? What does it mean to be a Muslim living in the West?

These are critical issues facing Muslims living in Australia. There is no consensus between the Muslim minority about these critical issues, hence, our aim at the Academy of Young Muslims Australia is to assist Australian Muslim children obtain an understanding of their religious, cultural and ethnic identities, but at the same time, raise awareness about their national identity, their Australian identity.

We believe that the Islamic identity is multi-faceted, fluid and dynamic in nature. Muslims are not required to adopt a single identity. For example, a Muslim born in Australia whom has parents born in Turkey retains four different identities in one:

1. National identity- Australian
2. Ethnic identity- Turkish
3. Religious identity- Islam
4. Cultural Identity- Australian and Turkish

A fusion and synergy of the aforesaid identities produce a productive citizen that integrates themselves into the Australian society by accepting the laws and regulations fixed by the Australian constitution, but also, preserves an Islamic identity that does not compromise the core creedal and religious precepts of Islam. Thats right! Islam is about being in tact with society instead of living strictly within the confines of a group with parochial views. The importance of such an initiative cannot be emphasized enough because creating such an understanding definitely takes time, therefore, such education must commence at a young age. The Australian Muslim community needs this level of openness due to the context that we live in. Muslims living in Australia need to be taught from a very young age about the Australian way of life. The diverse and multicultural context of Australia needs to be taken into consideration in building a harmonious and prosperous future.

So, the question your asking by now is 'what do they teach at the Academy of Young Muslims Australia?' We teach a total of eight subjects. They are as follows:
